Export earnings from timber, wooden furniture reached 7.3 billion USD

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) reported that export revenues from timber and wooden furniture reached 7.3 billion USD in 2016, a year-on-year rise of 1 percent.

According to Deputy Head of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry under the MARD Nguyen Ba Ngai, the export turnover of wooden furniture and other forestry products increased by between 5-10 percent while the export turnover of wood chip remained a key staple in 2016.

China is the biggest importer of wood chip from Vietnam. However, Vietnam’s wood chip is currently facing fiercer competition from the similar product of Thailand, Australia and African countries, Mr.Nguyen Ba Ngai noted.

In order to improve the quality and ensure the supply of materials, Vietnam has increased forest areas. Vietnam’s total area of timber forests now exceeds 127,700 hectares, according to the Vietnam Administration of Forestry.
