New international container terminal of HCMC put into operation

A new international container terminal was inaugurated on September 18 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said that the SP-ITC terminal, which was just a muddy area five years ago, would become an important trading gate not only for HCM City but for the key economic region in the southern part of the country.

The operation of this international container terminal is expected to boost trade activities of the southern city whose biggest port is severely overloaded.

“The new port will share the burden with the Cat Lai Port, which is already overloaded with export and import activities,” the Deputy Minister noted.

The SP-ITC international container terminal covered over 48ha in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City with a total investment of more than 200 million USD. The SP-ITC terminal is able to receive container ships 230 metres long with up to 35,000 deadweight tonnage.

Facing Dong Nai and Ong Nhieu Rivers, the newly-opened terminal is also connected with the Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway and the Cai Mep international terminal in the neighbouring Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

SP-ITC’s favourable location is expected to promote trade across the Mekong Delta region, particularly in Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces.
